Kandy Perahera –
Festival of the Sacred Tooth Relic

The Kandy Perahera, held annually in Kandy during July or August around the Esala full moon, is one of the most magnificent cultural and religious festivals in Asia. It honors the sacred tooth relic of Gautama Buddha, preserved in the revered Temple of the Sacred Tooth Relic.

A Spectacular Procession

Each night, thousands of performers fill the streets—graceful dancers, powerful drummers, fire artists, and elaborately dressed elephants. The atmosphere is vibrant, spiritual, and deeply moving. The celebrations grow in intensity over several days, culminating in the grand “Maha Perahera,” a breathtaking final procession that draws visitors from around the world.

A Unique Cultural Heritage

The festival beautifully blends Buddhist devotion with Hindu traditions, symbolizing unity and faith. It is not only a religious event but also a living expression of Sri Lanka’s rich history and identity.

Vesak in Sri Lanka –
A Festival of Light, Peace, and Giving

Vesak is one of the most beautiful and meaningful festivals in Sri Lanka. It celebrates the birth, enlightenment, and passing of Lord Buddha, bringing the whole island together in a spirit of peace, reflection, and compassion.

During Vesak, Sri Lanka transforms into a magical place filled with colorful lanterns, glowing lights, and artistic displays that tell stories from Buddha’s life. Cities like Colombo and Kandy shine brightly with illuminated pandals, while villages and homes are decorated with traditional oil lamps. Everywhere you go, you feel a special atmosphere of calm, kindness, and unity.

But Vesak is not only about lights. It is also a time of giving. People offer free food and drinks to others, share with those in need, and come together to support one another.

At Shalom Sri Lanka Tours & Travels, this spirit is very close to our heart. Through our journeys, we support children, youth, and families in need across Sri Lanka. When you travel with us, you are not only discovering a beautiful country, but also becoming part of something meaningful.

Let us make a difference together — with a seed of love. 🌻

Experience Sri Lanka not only as a destination, but as a journey of connection, culture, and compassion.

Tamil and Sinhala New Year

Sinhala and Tamil New Year – Shalom Sri Lanka Tours and Travels

Sinhala and Tamil New Year marks the end of the harvest season in Sri Lanka and is known as Aluth Avurudda. It is one of the most important cultural festivals, celebrated by both Sinhalese and Tamil communities in a spirit of unity, joy, and new beginnings. Tradition says that the Prince of Peace, Indradeva, comes to earth during this time to bless people with happiness and peace.

During the festival, families prepare traditional foods such as Kiribath, Kavum, and Kokis. People clean their homes, wear new clothes, and take part in rituals, games, drumming with the Raban, and community celebrations. The festival takes place in mid April, usually on the 13th or 14th, and brings the whole country together.
